Renting a Vehicle FAQ

How old do I have to be to rent a car?
21 years old is the minimum age to rent a car. At our discretion, 24 years of age and under, no 4x4/SUVs can be rented.

Do I have to have insurance?
You are required to have, at least, the state mandated minimum liability. We can sell you the additional coverage you need. R.C.P. purchase covers our vehicle, up to $20,000 (twenty-thousand) in the case of a collision. Lo-Cost Auto Rental also offers Roadside Assistance to help with incidents such as lockouts or lost keys.

Will you pick me up?
Yes, Lo-Cost Auto Rental can do a free pickup in the Dillon area (within 15 miles) if staff is available. If we do a pick up beyond that area, while rare, we will impose a fee of One Dollar and Fifty Cents ($1.50)/mile and this is also dependent on personnel availability.

Do you deliver our rental?
We do NOT usually deliver vehicles except to our local airports: Dillon Airport, Ruby Valley Aviation, and Dell Airport areas (airport access fee applies). If all info to rent has been obtained prior to rental, we will consider delivery to other places, provided renter is available to sign the agreement and take possession of the vehicle. Non-airport delivery and pick up charges will apply. Rental must be confirmed at least 2 hours in advance to confirm delivery.

What are your vehicle rental requirements?
You must be at least 21 years old with a valid un-expired driver's license (with photo), proof of insurance (showing a minimum of state mandated liability or the deductibles if full coverage), valid credit or debit card in Renter's or Additional Driver's name.

What are your driver's license requirements?
Renters who reside in the United States, U.S. Territories, or Canada must present a valid, unexpired government-issued driver's license which includes a photograph of the renter. Digital licenses are not accepted. The driver's license must be valid for the entire rental period. Photocopies (electronic or paper) of driver's licenses are not accepted. Learner's Permits are not accepted.
Any license which, on its face, restricts the licensee to the use and operation of a vehicle equipped with a form of breathalyzer apparatus is not accepted.
Temporary driver's licenses may be refused if the renting location is unable to otherwise verify the customer's identity or verify the authenticity of the temporary license. Additional government-issued identification may be required.
Customers traveling to the United States from another country must present the following:

  • If their home country's driver's license is in a language other than English and the letters are English, an International Driver's Permit is required for translation purposes in addition to the home country driver's license.
  • If the home country driver's license is in a language other than English and the letters are not English (i.e., alphabet is not an extended latin-based alphabet like German or Spanish but is Russian, Japanese, Arabic, etc.), an International Driver's Permit is required.
  • If an International Driver's Permit cannot be obtained in the home country, another professional, type-written translation may be substituted. In either case, the home country driver's license must also be presented.
  • Customers may not rent a vehicle solely with the International Driver's Permit. The International Driver's Permit is a translation of the individual's home country driver's license and is not considered valid identification.

What deposit is required?
If you will be paying for the rental or if direct billing has not been set up through other means, we require a deposit of $250 + the entirety of the expected rental (rounded to the nearest $25 increment). Any unused portion will be released from the authorization after the vehicle is returned and final charges are assessed. Portions, up to full deposit, will be kept if the vehicle is damaged, if there is evidence of pets or smoking (legal and/or illegal substances), is not returned with a full tank of fuel, or if there is excessive dirtiness.
In the event billing has been confirmed with an insurance company, we require a deposit of Seventy-Five dollars ($75.00) to cover incidentals. I.E., forgetting to top off the fuel tank, over mileage, etc.

Can I add an additional driver to my rental?
Yes, you may add an additional driver at no extra cost. The additional driver must meet all the same requirements: 21 years old with a valid driver's license, insurance with minimum liability with purchase of R.C.P., and sign the documents provided at the time of the rental. The additional driver must be listed on the primary driver's insurance or have their own.

Can I pay for another person's rental
Yes, you may. However, you must be physically present or make prior arrangements before the vehicle is picked up. Photo ID must have same name as credit card.

Is there a penalty for returning a vehicle early?
No. However, if you have purchased any additional insurances, we are unable to refund those charges.

Is there a penalty for returning a vehicle late?
No. There is no penalty for returning a vehicle late. We will extend your rental and any insurance you require. Since our rentals run on a 24-hour clock, any return over 2 hours past the return time will result in another day added to your rental.
If you are wanting to extend your rental, you must contact us before your scheduled return time. When extending a rental, the branch will/may need to place an additional authorization on your credit or debit card. Rates are subject to change based on the length of your rental extension.
If the customer fails to return this vehicle within 48 hours of the due date and time contained herein, the customer can be convicted of failure to return rented or leased personal property, an offense which carries a sentence of imprisonment for a term of up to 10 years. Montana Criminal Statute: 45-6-309.

What is your pet policy?
Pets may be allowed in our vehicles. If there is no other option or a pet must accompany you, we will impose a $75 fee to the rental and a possible cleaning/detailing fee. If you have a pet that you did not disclose to us prior to the rental, we will charge a $150 pet fee and additional cleaning/detailing fees.
Customers need to keep pets crated and return their rental car in clean condition and free of pet hair. Service animals used by customers with disabilities are allowed in the vehicle without a carrier.

What should I do if I get into an accident in a rental car?
If you are in an accident, your safety is most important. Get to a safe location, call 911 or the local authorities for assistance and file a police report. Call Lo-Cost Auto Rental at (406) 683-4147 with information about the accident and damages. If Lo-Cost Auto Rental is not open, call the Roadside Assistance phone number found on your agreement to have the vehicle towed to a safe location. If you did not purchase R.C.P. or R.C.P. Roadside Assistance, there may be a charge for the towing.

What should I do if my rental car breaks down?
Renter may purchase Roadside Assistance Protection (R.A.P.) from Lo-Cost Auto Rental for an additional fee. If Renter purchases R.A.P., Lo-Cost Auto Rental agrees, subject to the actions that invalidate Damage Waiver, to contractually waive Renter's responsibility to provide 24/7 Roadside Assistance (where available) which includes replacement of lost keys (including remote entry devices), flat tire service (if no inflated spare is available, vehicle will be towed and the cost of a replacement tire is not covered by R.A.P.), lockout service (if the keys are locked inside the vehicle), jump starts, and fuel delivery service up to 3 gallons (or equivalent liters) of fuel if the Vehicle is out of fuel. Roadside Assistance Protection services are only available in the United States and Canada. If Renter does not purchase R.A.P., or R.A.P. is invalidated as set forth above, roadside assistance will be available, but standard charges will apply. R.A.P. does not apply in Mexico.
